Miles Thompson is six, and he's brave all day long — fastest kid on the slide, never scared of anything. But when the lights go out, the shadows on his wall turn into giants. Then his daddy sits down on the edge of his bed and asks a question that changes everything: what if the dark isn't scary at all? Ten rhyming pages, ten detailed line drawings, and one little boy who finds out the dark is full of friends — the moon, the stars, the fireflies, and a hundred dreams just waiting to start.

Miles Thompson was brave when the sun filled the sky —
he climbed to the top of the slide, way up high.
He raced with the big kids, he swung, and he slid —
but when bedtime came, Miles wanted to hide.

1
The shadows grew tall on his wall like a crowd,
and every small creak in the house sounded loud.
He pulled up his blanket clear over his head.
“There's something out there!” was all that he said.

2
His daddy came in and sat close on the bed.
“What if the dark isn't scary?” he said.
“What if it's soft, like a big, cozy coat
that wraps up the whole world and keeps it afloat?”

3
He opened the curtains. “Now look — can you see?
The moon keeps its lantern lit for you and me.
The stars are a night-light that never goes out.
The dark's full of friends if you look all about.”

4
Outside his window the fireflies glowed,
winking their hellos all over the road.
An owl asked gently, “Whooo? Whooo are you?”
“I'm Miles!” he whispered. “How do you do?”

5
Back in his room, the tall shadows looked small —
just blocks, and his toy shelf, and chair by the wall.
“The giants were only my toys all along!
The dark plays pretend!” And he laughed loud and long.

6
He gave the dark a high-five and said,
“You're not so scary — you're soft instead.
You're where all my dreams are waiting to start.
Goodnight, Mister Dark — you're a work of art.”

7
He waved at the moon and he winked at a star,
then hugged Captain Bear to his chest. “We are
the bravest two boys in the whole Milky Way —”
and he yawned the biggest of yawns of the day.

8
That night his dreams were all silver and blue —
he sailed on the moon in a slow, gentle boat,
and fireflies cheered as they kept him afloat,
past stars that all whispered, “We knew it! We knew!”

9
So if the dark ever feels scary to you,
remember what Miles and his daddy both knew:
the dark isn't empty — it's soft and it's deep.
Now tell me — what will YOU find when the lights go to sleep?
